01 · Why Paytm

The way India actually pays online.

Paytm covers the dominant Indian payment methods: UPI, cards, wallets and net banking. If you sell to India in INR, Paytm is the right gateway.

UPI payments

India’s most-used payment method. Customers pay from any UPI app — PhonePe, Google Pay India, BHIM — with one QR scan or VPA.

Cards

Visa, Mastercard, RuPay, Amex, Diners. Both credit and debit cards accepted.

Mobile wallets

Paytm wallet, plus other major Indian wallets. Familiar checkout for the audience that uses them daily.

Net banking

Direct bank transfers from 50+ Indian banks. Required for many B2B and higher-value B2C transactions.

RBI-regulated

Operates under Reserve Bank of India guidelines. Compliance handled at the gateway level.

Localised checkout

Currency in INR, language in English (Hindi optional), payment methods Indians actually use. Reduces friction for the local audience.

02 · How to connect Paytm

India-registered business required.

  1. Get a Paytm merchant account

Apply at paytm.com or via PayUmoney. India-registered business, PAN and bank details required.

  2. Connect in Freewebstore

In your control panel, go to Orders > Payment Gateways > PayUmoney. Add the merchant key and salt that Paytm gives you.

  3. Go live with UPI & cards

Test in Paytm’s sandbox, flip to production, you’re taking Indian payments. Money settles to your business bank in INR.

Honest answers

Paytm + Freewebstore, the questions you actually have.

  • Can I sell to India from a non-Indian Freewebstore?

Paytm requires an India-registered business and Indian bank account. If you’re based elsewhere, you can still sell to Indian customers via Stripe or PayPal — just not via Paytm. For India-only businesses, Paytm is the right choice.

  • What is the difference between Paytm and PayUmoney?

PayUmoney is the merchant payment-acceptance brand under the Paytm umbrella. They’re effectively the same product. Our control panel lists it as PayUmoney.

  • Does Paytm support UPI?

Yes — UPI is the default payment method. Customers pay from any UPI app (PhonePe, Google Pay India, BHIM, Paytm) with a QR code or VPA at checkout.

  • What does Paytm cost?

Paytm rates vary by payment type. UPI is typically the cheapest, cards are similar to global gateways, net banking and wallets sit in between. Get a quote during application.
