Security

Free SSL.
On every store.

A valid SSL certificate is non-negotiable for ecommerce — without it, browsers block your checkout. Every Freewebstore gets one automatically. Industry-standard 256-bit encryption, auto-renewed, on every plan.

01 · What it does

Encrypts the connection between customer and store.

256-bit SHA encryption

Industry standard. Customer card numbers, personal details and passwords are unreadable to anyone in between.

The browser padlock

Modern browsers warn customers about stores without SSL. Yours shows the trusted padlock from day one.

Auto-renewed

Certificates expire every 90 days. Ours renew automatically — you never get the dreaded “your certificate is expiring” email.

Works on custom domains

Connect your own domain and SSL is provisioned for it automatically once the nameservers point to ours.

02 · Why it’s free

Because charging for SSL in 2026 is daft.

Free SSL certificate authorities like Let’s Encrypt have made certificates effectively free for years. Some platforms still charge $10-20 a year per store. We don’t.

SSL used to cost money — certificate authorities like Verisign charged for the validation work involved in issuing a trusted certificate. Free authorities now do the validation automatically, and the certificates are just as trusted by browsers.

We’ve always included SSL free. It’s the kind of small thing that adds up over the life of a free Community store — £15 or so a year that other platforms quietly bill, and we don’t.

Honest answers

Frequently asked questions.

  • Is SSL really free on Freewebstore?

Yes — on every plan including the free Community plan. Every store gets a valid SSL certificate that’s renewed automatically. No setup, no certificate authority paperwork, no cost.

  • Do I need to do anything to enable SSL?

No. SSL is enabled automatically when your store goes live. If you connect a custom domain, SSL is provisioned for it as soon as the domain’s nameservers point to ours.

  • What does the padlock icon mean for my customers?

It tells them the connection to your store is encrypted with industry-standard 256-bit SHA encryption. Their payment details and personal info can’t be intercepted in transit. Modern browsers refuse to load checkout pages without it.

  • Why do other platforms charge for SSL?

Historically SSL certificates cost money to issue. Free certificate authorities like Let’s Encrypt changed that years ago, but some platforms still charge. We pass the saving on.
