01 · What every club shop needs

Kit, personalisation, members, matchday. Same four jobs, any sport.

The workflow is the same whether you’re selling rugby shirts, hockey sticks, cricket whites or running vests. Handled out of the box.

Kit and equipment

Home, away, training, warm-up. Boots and studs, sticks and balls, gloves and gum shields. Product Options handle sizes and variants; Categories keep it organised by team.

Name and number printing

Size as a variant, name and number as a Checkout Form. Prints straight from the order. Works for shirts, warm-ups, kit bags, water bottles, anything with a name on it.

Members and memberships

Member-only pricing via Discount Codes. Membership itself as a digital product with recurring billing. Emails to members from your own address list — not through a third party.

Matchday collection

A free “Collect at the ground” shipping method restricted to local postcodes. Royal Mail Tracked or courier for everyone else. Pick and print from the order screen.

What size does your club need to be? Any size. Sunday-league five-a-side sides, community-hall netball clubs, university sports societies, established semi-pro clubs. The set-up is the same at every level, and the platform stays free.

02 · Any sport, any code

Whatever your club plays. The shop shape is the same.

03 · Name and number, done properly

Personalisation is the moment. Get it right.

Every player wants their name on the back. Every parent wants their kid’s. Here’s how the plumbing works.

Freewebstore splits jersey products into two concerns. Sizes are Product Options with per-variant stock and SKU. Names and numbers are Checkout Forms — a short form filled in at checkout. Both come through on the order so whoever prints the kit prints straight from the order screen.

Football clubs typically run this at scale (see the deep-dive below). Rugby and hockey use the same set-up for player initials and squad numbers. Netball tends to use position markers (GS, GD etc.) instead of numbers. Cricket clubs often personalise with player initials on the whites. Whatever the convention in your sport, the set-up is the same.

04 · Getting one going

Fifteen minutes to a working shop. Committee approval takes longer.

05 · Sport-specific deep-dives

Guides tailored to your code.

The football page includes a live case study — a real running club shop with squad numbers, matchday collection and roster section — plus how personalisation fits together in detail.

Not on the list? Rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, athletics, basketball, martial arts — the flagship football page covers workflows that translate directly. Or start your free shop and use the football guide as a template. Kit-and-personalisation set-up is identical across codes.

Honest answers

Running a sports club shop, the questions you actually have.

  • Which sports does this work for?

Any sport. Freewebstore club shops run today for rugby union, rugby league, hockey, netball, cricket, athletics, basketball, boxing, cycling, martial arts, rowing, running clubs, water polo. If your sport has kit and members, the shop works.

  • How do we handle name-and-number personalisation on shirts?

Size goes as a Product Option variant (each size with its own stock and SKU). Name and squad number go as a Checkout Form — a short form the buyer fills in at checkout. The personalisation details show up on the order screen and in the confirmation email, so whoever prints the kit can work straight from the order.

  • Can we set up member-only pricing?

Yes. Members log in and see member prices via Discount Codes tied to their account, or via a member-only category. Some clubs run a free code that’s shared privately with paid-up members; others link the shop to their membership system through Zapier or the REST API.

  • Do you take a cut of every sale?

Freewebstore’s Community plan is free forever and takes 2.5% per sale to keep the platform running. Paid plans drop that to 0.5%. No monthly subscription. A club moving £3,000 a year of merch pays roughly £75 on the free plan. See full pricing.

  • Do we need a full-time person to run the shop?

No. Most grassroots club shops are run part-time by a volunteer or committee member. Orders come in as email notifications; you pick, print a label and post — or hold them for matchday collection. Half a Saturday morning covers most weeks.
