How the math works

The calculator shows only the layers where the platforms actually differ. Payment processing (roughly 2.9% + 30¢) is roughly equal on Wix, Freewebstore or anywhere else — so it cancels out and isn’t in the totals.

Wix plan pricing (published mid-2026, USD):

  • Light $17/mo ($204/yr) — Wix takes 2.5% of every sale, Wix ads still on your store
  • Core $29/mo ($348/yr) — reduced Wix transaction fee, no Wix ads
  • Business $36/mo ($432/yr) — 0% Wix transaction fee via Wix Payments, no ads

What we don’t count: premium theme costs, custom development, payment processor fees (equal on both), and one-off costs like site migration. Wix doesn’t offer a clean export, so migrating away is more work than the number here suggests — something to factor in if you’re weighing platforms.

  • Is this a real calculation or a marketing gimmick?

    Real math using published prices. Nothing is inflated. The add-on prices are the standard starter tiers from the Wix App Market and Wix Ascend — a mid-tier merchant usually pays more than the numbers here suggest, not less. Freewebstore’s Community fee is 2.5% and StartUp’s is 0.5%, both published on our pricing page.

  • Why does Wix Business look so much less painful than Shopify?

    Wix bundles more into its subscription than Shopify does, so the app stack is thinner. The real Wix problem is different: no clean export. If you decide to leave Wix (or Wix raises prices, which they did in 2023 and 2024) you can’t take your site with you — it’s a rebuild. Freewebstore exports your products via CSV any time.

  • Does Freewebstore charge transaction fees?

    Yes — that’s how the free plan stays free. Community charges 2.5% per sale. Paid plans drop that to 0.5%. There’s no third-party gateway surcharge on either — use PayPal or Stripe and we don’t add anything.

  • Can I share these numbers?
