Create your Online Store
In Part 2 we will discover the power of the Theme Editor and other tools to design your store.
Now that we have our products and categories sorted, we need to know what the next step to creating our perfect webstore is.
We've already been given a ready made design and it looks great. However, we need to add some final touches in order to make it work with our products and our brand.
So how do I do this?
Designing. But How?
So what do I need to do to make the design my own? There are many things that we want to change and firstly, let's start with the colors of the webstore.
Using the right color for your store can be tricky, too much of one color can overwhelm the customer and too little color can look boring and dull. Using the right colors on your store is very important. You want to make sure you pick colors that portray your company’s brand as well as showing off your products as best they can. Also bear in mind that certain colors for your text can be hard to read so, although certain colors may look pretty if nobody can read your text it is defeating the object.
Don't worry about creating a high-end, graphical super logo, it's not what a logo should look like and it definitely isn't the place for detailed graphics work. Generally, the simpler a logo, the better. Take a look at some of the largest cooperations in the world, they all seem to follow a pattern: Simple text logos.
To begin with, create a simple text logo (you can always change this for a more detailed logo at a later date).
Not all designs support logos, however this doesn't mean you can't add your logo into the page content or banner regions.
All designs support backgrounds. Subtle backgrounds that don't distract your customers from your products work best, therefore I would usually simply leave the background color as white or change it to a light grey so it doesn't take focus away from the main content of the page.
With over 700 different font choices for your store it can become somewhat overwhelming to find that perfect font for your store. Try to pick a font that will be easy on the eyes and easy to read. Why not test a variety of fonts by adding a large paragraph of text and seeing if you struggle to read it or not.
Depending on the design you have chosen, you may or may not have access to the left and right banner regions - However, all designs have a footer banner area.
Banner areas are a great place to advertise products on your store or add a small snippet of informative text. Try to keep these areas clean, and simple - Too much content in the banners may overwhelm your customer.
Use them wisely, most of the time you won't need to add banner content, however do not add Google Adsense - Remember, you're trying to keep your customers on your store, not make them leave.
In Part 3 we'll learn about adding our own text content to our stores pages.
